Being the third generation in the family of DS hand held gaming consoles, the Nintendo DSi wanted to appeal to a larger and more varied audience. As a result, on top of enhancing existing features it has some new capabilities as well.
Nintendo wanted to get it right and so, after screening what existing customers were saying about the other versions they came up with the DSi. This console has a bigger screen at 3.25 inches and is about 12% thinner than the DS lite which, unfortunately, means there is no longer enough room for the Gameboy Advance slot.
The camera is probably the first, new, noticeable function. This has software with eleven different lenses for multiple special effects which compensates for the rather low 0.3 mega pixel resolution.Users can do various things with their photos from turning them black and white to merging two faces together to make one.
The next added feature is the audio player including a microphone which enables the user to manipulate the pitch and speed of sounds. Obviously endless fun is to be had here but it also has the more practical use of saving time when needing to get to an exact part of a Podcast, piece of music or speech.
The DSi can now access the web as well. With its own browser, aptly called the DSi browser, surfing the net is absolutely simple. It also makes it easy to click on the DSi shop where anything related to the DS platform is readily available.
Nintendo, however, know a good thing when they see one and aren’t about to let this platform fall behind the times. The next member of the DS team is Nintendo 3DS. Around the same size as the DSi but with funkier colors, the 3DS, as you might expect, not only lets you game in 3D without having to wear those pesky glasses but also lets you shoot in 3D as it has an extra 640 x 480 resolution camera on the outside as well as a VGA camera on the inside. The controls are pretty much the same as the DSi except the 3DS sports an analogue joystick too and as an added bonus it has a motion sensor and gyroscope that lets you completely immerse yourself in the whole 3D experience.
Nintendo always like to keep their fingers on the pulse when it concerns new trends and the Nintendo DSi is proof of this as a wider and wider range of people are starting to have fun with it.
